SOD (Sudden Oak Death)
Probably headed our way. See links. We all may need to remove any Bay Laurels within 30m of susceptible oaks (live, black, tan). there may be a spring survey in the area via the lab - sign up there. who else is working on this in the area? Let's get this publicized and get the community working to preserve oak trees.
links did not appear with listing:
Along with Orinda, there will be a "SOD Blitz' survey in Lafayette in April. As many residents as possible needed to collect samples for analysis. There will be a training/orientation beforehand. Results will be posted to show if any SOD was found (typically on bay laurels).
also, highly recommend becoming aware - via web sites and the matteolab workshops - of risks and prophylatic treatments. Local garden suppliers should start carrying the sprays, chemicals, applicators/injectors. Once an oak is infected it may not be obvious for years but it is doomed.
More info to come when available.
