Sweet Thursday presents: Treasures of the Bancroft Library with Susan Snyder
Designed for: Adults
The Friends of the Lafayette Library welcomes Susan Snyder, the head of public service at the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley. For over 20 years, it has been Snyder's job to explore the library's stacks, attics, and moats, and she has uncovered an amazing treasure of historical photographs images which she has lovingly and intelligently organized into several books:
Bear in Mind: The California Grizzly (2003)
Everyday Dogs: A Perpetual Calendar for Birthdays and Other Notable Dates (2011)
Beyond Words: 200 Years of Illustrated Diaries (2011)
Snyder will describe the process of finding the images, placing them in a historical context, and organizing them into books. Special attention will be given to Beyond Words, an "Oprah Book Pick", which shows the diaries of Bay Area luminaries such as LeConte and Muir, as well as beat poets and 12-year old girls.
Joyce Carol Oates says of Beyond Words, "Brilliantly selected and arranged, visually as well as intellectually striking, this gathering of diaries of mostly little-known Americans brings us into abrupt, startling, and poignant intimacy with the wonderfully diverse diarists."
Sponsored by the Friends of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center.
